Public Consultation | Tariffs applied (USA) to Portuguese products
The Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) of AIDA CCI, in collaboration with CIP – Confederation of Portuguese Business, hereby requests your urgent contributions regarding the tariffs currently applied by US authorities to Portuguese products exported to that market.
Context of the New Tariff Measures
Following the meeting held between CIP and BusinessEurope (BE), we share the main updates regarding the tariff measures recently adopted by the United States:
- As a result of the Presidential Proclamation, the tariffs under Section 122, in effect since February 24, correspond to the application of a 10% ad valorem duty, plus the MFN (Most Favoured Nation) tariff.
- In certain cases (about 7% of EU exports to the US), the applied rate may be higher than the 15% tariff provided for under the EU-US Joint Framework Agreement.
Objectives of the Joint Action
A course of action has been defined with BusinessEurope aiming to:
- Obtain precise information and clarification on the tariff that the US is effectively applying to EU products.
- Assess all implications of the US Government’s decision to use Section 122, and what this concretely means for exports.
- Defend respect for the EU-US Joint Framework Agreement, which provides for an inclusive 15% tariff, demanding clarification from the US Government.
- Promote stability and predictability in the transatlantic relationship, prioritising the reduction of tariffs and costs for companies.
- Monitor the developments of the situation together with the European Commission.
