AIDA CCI strengthens business cooperation between Aveiro and Oita, Japan’s semiconductor hub
After participating in Expo 2025 Osaka, AIDA CCI – Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the District of Aveiro – continued its mission in Japan with an institutional visit to Oita, a city twinned with Aveiro since 1978. The initiative took place within the scope of the Aveiro2World project, co-financed by CENTRO2030, Portugal 2030, and the European Union. It aimed to strengthen business and institutional ties between the two territories, as well as to internationally promote the quality, innovation, sophistication, and sustainability of the Aveiro Region’s products and services, reinforcing its global image as an advanced and exporting economic center.
Oita: A Strategic Partner at the Forefront of Technology
During the visit, the AIDA CCI delegation met with the International Relations Division of the Oita City Hall, addressing cooperation opportunities in the fields of technological research and development and trade promotion. Oita is recognized as one of the world’s leading hubs for semiconductor production, hosting multinational technology companies and research centers that fuel sectors such as electronics, electric mobility, digital health, and artificial intelligence, playing a central role in Japanese competitiveness and the global economy.
The complementarity between the two territories creates space for synergies and business cooperation, reinforcing the ambition of both to position themselves as benchmarks in the international technology industry.
Focus on Future Sectors: Semiconductors and Habitat
The visit resulted in a joint commitment between AIDA CCI and the Oita City Hall to support companies from both regions in creating strategic partnerships. The main areas of collaboration include:
- Research and Development (R&D): Creation of technological R&D partnerships between companies and research centers from Aveiro and Oita.
- Trade Relations: Promotion of business with a special focus on the microelectronics/semiconductor and habitat sectors.
- International Positioning: According to Elisabete Rita, Executive Vice-President and Director-General of AIDA CCI, “these strategic connections strengthen the international positioning of the district’s business fabric and create concrete opportunities for collaboration and investment between Portugal and Japan.”
Examples of leading companies based in Oita include Amkor Technology, MJC, Renesas Electronics Corporation, Sony Semiconductor, and Texas Instruments.
A Vision for the Future: The Aveiro2World Project
With the Aveiro Region establishing itself in the industrial innovation sector through investment in technology-based companies, precision metalworking, automation, electronics, and smart mobility, this mission takes on increased importance. According to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, these prospecting and promotion actions (participation in EXPO Osaka 2025 and the institutional visit to Oita) are also relevant for the creation of the future center for promoting the attractiveness of the Aveiro Region’s territory, planned within the Aveiro2World project. This project includes the medium-term launch of the “Aveiro Region Brand Management Strategy” platform.
