United States Announces New Tariffs on EU Imports
AIDA CCI is closely monitoring the latest changes in international trade policies. The United States of America (USA) has announced the imposition of new customs duties on key products such as automobiles, components, steel, and aluminum, with a direct impact on international trade and Portuguese exporting companies.
Reactivated Tariff Measures (Section 232)
According to the Presidential Proclamation of March 26, 2025, the US has reactivated Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act. This measure, aimed at protecting national security, imposes tariffs of up to 25% on automobiles and components from countries with trade practices deemed unfair.
Additionally, tariffs of 25% on steel and 25% on aluminum remain in effect, as indicated in the Federal Register.
New Reciprocal Tariff Strategy
The US administration has also introduced a new trade retaliation approach: the Reciprocal Tariff. According to the Proclamation of April 2, 2025, this 10% tariff will be applied to various products (listed in Annex II) to correct trade imbalances.
Impact on Portuguese Exports
These measures directly affect Portuguese companies, particularly in the following sectors:
- Automotive: Tariffs of up to 25% on complete vehicles, components, and automotive electronics.
- Metalworking and Steel: Steel and aluminum products subject to 25% tariffs.
- Chemicals and Raw Materials: A general 10% tariff on specific products.
Companies should review their export contracts and seek alternative logistical and market solutions.
