New UKCA Marking Regime
New Regulatory Framework for Product Exports to the United Kingdom
The Enterprise Europe Network at AIDA CCI, at the request of the British Embassy in Lisbon, reminds that the British Government has announced the introduction of a new regulatory framework for product marking. The new regime, called UK Conformity Assessed Marking (UKCA), will replace the CE marking for most products exported to the United Kingdom. Exporting companies have until December 31, 2022, to comply with the use of the UKCA marking on most of their goods.
Measures to Support Companies in the Transition to UKCA
The British Government has been working to minimize adaptation costs to the new regime. According to information provided in official documents, four measures have been introduced to support companies:
- Reduction of re-testing costs: Tests carried out by December 31, 2022, under CE marking can be used for UKCA, reducing costs and duplication of efforts.
- Existing stock: Products already placed on the UK market before the implementation date will not require re-testing or re-labeling.
- Spare parts: Spare parts meeting previous requirements will continue to be accepted for products already on the market.
- Labeling flexibility: Companies can continue using the UKCA mark on accompanying documents or labels until December 31, 2025.
Guides Available to Help Companies
The British Government provides a series of guidance documents to facilitate the transition to the UKCA regime. These resources are essential for companies to understand specific sector requirements and comply with new regulations:
- Guidance on using the UKCA marking
- Guidance on using the UKNI marking
- Guidance on placing goods on the Great Britain market
- Guidance on placing goods on the Northern Ireland market
- A-Z guidance for specific sectors
- UK Market Conformity Assessment Bodies (UKMCAB) database
Step-by-Step: How to Apply UKCA Marking
The “UKCA Step by Step” guide offers detailed instructions for companies. It explains how to apply the UKCA mark to place goods on the Great Britain market. Some goods can be self-certified, while others require conformity assessment by a UK-approved body. Check full details about the process in the official UKCA guide.
