UK Launches Anti-Subsidy Probe into Portuguese Limestone
The UK Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) has officially opened a new anti-subsidy investigation into imports of creamy/white limestone from Portugal. This follows an application from a UK producer alleging that the manufacture of these goods is being unfairly subsidised by the Portuguese government, causing injury to the domestic industry in the UK.
Case Development
Portuguese limestone is a premium natural stone product widely used in high-end UK architectural projects and heritage restorations. The application submitted to the TRA identifies 14 different subsidy programmes, including grants and non-refundable financing, which have allegedly enabled Portuguese producers to invest in advanced machinery and strengthen their competitive position in overseas markets.
The investigation period covers 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025, while the injury period spans from 2022 to 2025. Should the TRA find evidence of unfair subsidies and resulting injury, countervailing duties may be imposed on Portuguese imports.
